Monthly Spotlight July 2023: The American Psychiatric Association Foundation
For the July spotlight we chose to highlight the American Psychiatric Association (APA) Foundation. The APA Foundation is a nonprofit charitable foundation of the American Psychiatric Association. The APA Foundation raises mental health awareness to try to overcome the barriers that currently surround mental health and mental health conditions. They also support “future leaders in psychiatry”, provide mental health research and training opportunities, and lead partnerships to address the public challenges that can come with mental health stigma and the health care system. For psychiatrists, they also provide resources such as grants, fellowships, and awards, clinical training, funding for research training, and access to their library and archives.
The APA Foundation specifically provides community-based programs, education, fellowships and grants to “address critical mental health needs and direct resources where they are needed the most.” The APA Foundation also strives to make a lasting impact in schools, the work place, in the justice system, and in communities across the nation. These programs are important for the future of mental health, “to educate, inform, empower- to overcome the stigma, bias, and lack of accessible information associated with mental health issues.”
We support the important work that the APA and Foundation are doing and continue to do. Join us as we stand with the American Psychiatric Association and the American Psychiatric Foundation in their mission to eliminate stigma and break down the current barriers of mental health and mental illness.
